HISTORY

Welcome to historic Sarcoxie, long known as the “Strawberry Capital” and “Peony Capital of the World” during the 20th Century.  Sarcoxie, the oldest town in Jasper County, is located in Southwest Missouri and lies along the east-west corridor of I-44.  On October 20, 2014, Sarcoxie’s Historic Business District received National Registry of Historic Places’ designation.  The town is honored to receive this designation and gain recognition in Washington DC as a landmark of value that is to be preserved.

You are invited to share Sarcoxie’s historical past. Share the stories about the mines in the area, the first churches that offered the pioneers spiritual opportunities, local Civil War involvement and the Wild Nursery legacy.

The History of Sarcoxie Missouri, collected and written by local Historian Michelle Gautz, offers the opportunity to revisit our city's past and discover the people and events that built our hometown.
