PUBLIC SAFETY

Proudly operated by the Sarcoxie Police Department

The City of Sarcoxie operates its dog pound to help maintain public safety and responsible pet ownership within city limits. Our primary goal is to prevent dogs from running at large, where they may become a nuisance or pose a risk to residents and other animals. The pound provides a secure, temporary holding space until an owner can be located or claims their pet.

Protecting Public Safety and Responsible Pet Ownership

Purpose and Operations

The pound serves as a short‑term impound facility for dogs found roaming within city limits or involved in incidents requiring containment. Because the city does not have the resources for long‑term animal care, the pound’s function is limited to temporary housing until resolution — whether through owner reclamation, adoption eligibility, or court disposition.

Community Responsibility

Residents can help by:

  • Keeping pets properly tagged or microchipped

  • Reporting stray or aggressive dogs promptly

  • Following city ordinances regarding animal control and leash laws

Together, we can maintain a safe, respectful environment for both people and pets in Sarcoxie.

Lost or Impounded Dogs

Owners seeking to reclaim their dogs should contact the Sarcoxie Police Department. Proof of ownership is required, and applicable impound fees must be paid before release. Our staff works diligently to reunite pets with their families as quickly as possible.

Billy Malvin

Lead Caretaker

We’re grateful for the dedication and steady care our lead caretaker brings to the Sarcoxie City Dog Pound each day. His compassion and attention to detail ensure every impounded dog is treated safely and humanely while in our temporary care.

Billy's work keeps our operation running smoothly and supports both our community and the animals who rely on us. We appreciate everything he does to make a meaningful difference.

Dangerous or Aggressive Dogs

Dogs deemed dangerous or a threat to public safety are held separately pending court proceedings. If a dog is legally determined to be dangerous following a guilty conviction, it is permanently removed from city limits.

Dangerous dogs are not eligible for adoption.

This policy ensures the safety of residents and supports fair, lawful handling of all cases.
